GK&CO 10″ Black Blade Full tang kukri

Nepalese Kukri

This traditional knife is made in Dharan, East Nepal. The name Sirupate comes from the word Siru which is a very strong thin grass that grows in Nepal. Unlike other knives made in the area, this one is very thin and sharp so it is called a Sirupate Khukuri. This knife is designed and worn so it is easy to handle and work with. They usually have a ten inch blade made of 5160 high grade carbon steel which has been heat treated for strength, with a perfectly balanced and tempered edge that does not need to be sharpened often.

The handle which is made of very strong wood called rosewood is five inches long and in perfect balance with the blade. The full tang handle is flat which allows to better handling and more control as the hand closes nicely around the complete handle. It is made of two finely crafted rosewood pieces shaped in such a way that they mold against the inside of the hand. Both wooden pieces are safely and permanently attached to each other and the base of the blade with very strong rivets which are strong and almost impossible to separate.

These knives are hand-made and covered with a buffalo skin sheath which is covered on the inside with tightly packed cotton for your protection and easy removal. The black blade full tang kukri knife is perfect for camping or hunting. You can use it to chop wood, cut a path through the undergrowth and even to filet your fish or skin a deer. The blade does not break and maintains its sharpness for a long time even if you use and abuse it constantly.

Price

This really is a timeless piece.  The fact that it’s made in Nepal, the home of the Kukri is a massive plus as well.  It’s on the higher end price wise, but it is hand forged and could be handed down to your grandkids if it’s well looked after.  Check today’s price.

These are the specifications for this particular knife:

  • Blade Strength: Top – 22 – 25 RC, Middle – 45 – 46 RC and Edge – 58 – 60 RC.
  • Steel: 5160, heat treated car spring.
  • Blade size: ten inches
  • Handle size: five inches
  • Overall size: fifteen inches
  • Weight: Almost two pounds

The scabbard is made out of tough, thick buffalo skin that has been treated and shaped so the blade fits perfectly into it. Since the knives are hand-made the sheath has to be made for each individual knife and not in a factory mass production process. They are also hand-made for each particular knife. The buffalo leather is cut to the correct size and shape and then filled with cotton so that the knife can be moved smoothly out of the scabbard while at the same time remain safely in place when you travel with it.

These knives have been made and used for centuries so you cannot go wrong with something that has been proved over and over again, if a good knife is what you need, the black blade full tang kukri knife is perfect for you. It does not matter if you want it for hunting, fishing, camping or just for show they are made with the strength and resistance necessary for any job and they also look great.  See how it compares to the best survival machetes.  If you’re just looking for a different kukri, check out my reviews of the Ka bar kukri and the Condor Heavy Duty Kukri.
