When you are faced with severe danger, your brain will go into the three types of functions, which are flight, fight or freeze mode. The main goal is to survive and stay alive as long as possible. All bets will be off when an army of zombies begin to overrun your neighborhood. When you are left with no choice but to wage war against these hordes of flesh eating undead. You will begin to try to survive and when it comes to having the right type of tools for defense and surviving these zombies that are coming for you, you need a zombie sword. These are the types of weapons that will help you to thrive and survive in a zombie apocalypse like Michonne in the Walking Dead.
3 Best Zombie Swords
#1 Honshu War Sword by United Cutlery
This is an absolutely badass zombie sword. The Honshu war sword is a great sword from the Honshu line. It comes with a pretty sleek look with a modern look that really tells you that you are not looking for any type of nonsense from anyone, zombies included. The blade is almost 22 inches long and made of 1065 manganese steel that happens to come with black coating over the blade. The satin finished hand guard is TPR injected, so that gives you a pretty secure grip when you are using it. Overall, this sword is 30 inches long. Don’t worry, it comes with a pretty heavy duty sheath the really completes the package.
Alright, this is one of them bad boy swords that I had my eye on for the longest time. Before I finally broke down and bought it, I went back and looked at it many times, finally I knew I had to put it in my collection. It just looked so cool, and has a high quality design. The Honshu War Sword by United Cutlery is just amazing, let me tell you why!
To start off, it was within my budget and with my Prime account I got free shipping with 2-day delivery! I could not wait to get it and open the package. When I pulled this sucker out, it was massive, and heavy duty for sure.
Size matters
Measuring 30” in length from tip of the blade to the butt of the handle, the only thing standing between me and the awesome blade was a heavy duty sheath. Of course, I removed the sheath and staring back at me was a 21 ¼” blade designed from 1065 manganese steel. This thing was made to withstand some serious beatings and keep on going. The blade has a black coating to match the black sheath and dark handle. This really set off the look.
The handle
The handle is designed with TPR injection, which means the grip is going to be comfortable and secure as you wield it. The hand guard also has a dark satin finish that really makes the look pop, and all this for a fair price is a great deal. I have this piece hanging on my living room wall at the moment, that way all my friends can check out its beauty and it starts up great conversations. Let’s move into the pros and cons!
Honshu war sword Pros
- It is affordable for most collectors.
- Blade is designed with 1065 manganese steel
- Handle allows for comfortable and secure grip
- Includes heavy duty sheath for protection
Honshu war sword Cons:
- If used for cutting, the black coating tends to chip off over time but that’s to be expected
Honshu war sword Verdict:
The Honshu War Sword by United Cutlery is one of my favorite swords at this moment. The blade is over 21 inches long, with an overall length of 30 inches, making it a great piece for hanging up in my living room. I did use it a couple times to see how well it cut, and I noticed a small chip on the coating, but other than that I have no issues with the Honshu War Sword. Even the name is fun to say, Honshu!
#2 Walking dead katana
This is one of the most popular zombie swords on earth. If you are tired of having that old broken down machete, then you need the Walking Dead katana that Michonne carries. This katana is quite strong and is completely functional unlike most movie/tv show replicas. It was created using the ancient method and is made of combined materials such as folded steel maru structure. It is quite sharp and strong and it will be able to cut through a zombie without any issues. The sheath and handle are wrapped in high quality white leather. It is really a nice piece of craftsmanship. It is 41 inches long and only weighs less than 5 pounds. So that means it will be easy to wield.
If you are a fan of The Walking Dead series, or even if you have watched any of the show since season two, you have likely seen the katana sword wielding Michonne. She is one bad chick with a deadly weapon, fully prepared trained and ready to use when needed! But, for those sword lovers out there who want to know more about the sword dubbed the ‘Walking Dead Katana’, keep reading.
The Tsuka length is 12.25”, with blade length of 27.75”. The material used for the blade is tempered 1045 carbon steel, meaning it’s strong and functional, it’s not just a display piece.
My love of katanas
The Samarui sword, better known as the katana is one of my favorite weapons closely followed by the Wakizashi. I love katanas for several reasons. I love Japanese history and love Samarui and Ninja warriors. For the record, the Ninja sword was not a katana. Japanese swords are some of the best in the world, and not just the I find the look to be appealing, and of course the quality is above all else. The katana along with the long sword and the viking sword is the most famous of Medieval swords. I always look at the overall quality of a katana when reviewing them, but rarely do I find ‘novelty’ style katana’s that have a quality build and not simply for looks. This is the case for fantasy swords as well. However, I have found the Walking Dead Katana to be worthy of my review, which already puts it at the top of the novelty katana list, right? Let’s get to it.
This katana has amazing craftsmanship, with the tsuka being wrapped with appealing color and leather. I have always found leather wrapped is higher quality than nylon, for obvious reasons. On this katana, it means I get a combination of an appealing looking piece of art and I can represent one of my favorite shows too. Talk about a conversation starter!
Is it functional?
You can tell this thing was built with functionality in mind, with the blade being very sturdy and a durable wooden saya. Of course, it would not be complete without the carry strap being provided. This thing has covered all bases.
The tsuba
Let’s get into the tsuba, which is designed using bronze and a nickel plated covering to provide a great look and makes it sturdy. The design is neat, and gives a biohazard look which matches the theme of zombies taking over the planet.
My only negative
However, I cannot give it full credit as I do have one negative aspect, upon receiving the katana it was not sharpened. This is likely because it’s being sold as a novelty item and not a ready to use product. If you are wanting to use it in action for cutting foam rolls, bamboo, etc. (hopefully zombies aren’t here yet), you will need to get the blade sharpened. For the review purpose, I have sharpened mine, and used it on foam rolls. The blade seems to cut smoothly for being a novelty item, but I have yet to try it on bamboo.
#3 Tactical Katana by Cold Steel
This is the latest additional to the Cold Steel family. This tactical katana is modeled after the Warrior Series Katana. It has a deeply curved blade that will give you more of a sword feel when you are cutting into nasty zombie flesh. It has a full tang that is broad, and uses solid steel tsuba and it is injected over a mold to create a high impact polymer handle that is really durable. This weapon is almost 37 inches long and does weigh almost 3 pounds. The blade is made from 1055 high carbon steel with a black baked on antirust matte finish. It does come with a sheath so you don’t have to worry about cutting yourself while carrying this zombie survival sword.
This option is much cheaper than the other two. Check price at amazon.
Surviving a zombie attack is all about having a plan and having the right type of materials and weapons needed to take down a horde. With these weapons you can’t go wrong. If you’re looking for other zombie weapons, you might be interested in a zombie axe or a zombie machete.
